Last time on Fanloid Feature, I talked a bit about Meito. This time, I’m going to be focusing on the most familiar Vocaloid genderswap, Mikuo. To begin, I won’t debate whether Mikuo is Miku’s brother, friend, boyfriend, doppelganger or what-have-you. Like any Vocaloid, he is a voice first and whatever else you want him to be second. No official mandates exist to dictate his character.

The most common Mikuo songs are just regular Miku songs where the pitch was shifted to make Miku’s voice sound deeper. Often, this yields poor results and lowers the overall sound quality. However, were you aware that original Mikuo songs exist? There aren’t many, nor have they achieved any spectacular amount of success, but they do exist. In my hunt for such gems, I discovered something interesting. The highly prolific hobonichiP (ほぼ日P) had, once upon a time, made a handful of original Mikuo songs. Below, I’ve compiled a short list of Mikuo songs that I found to be worth listening to. This list includes some covers, but none of them were made by pitch-shifting an entire song. I’ll note that the tone of his voice varies from song to song because even the tuning setting of his voice is debatable.

【ニコニコ動画】【MMD】MEITOでNostalogic【歌ってもらった】

I recently discovered something beautiful.

That is, Meito, the genderbend of Meiko. I knew that Kaiko was fairly popular, but I never realized that people actually made songs with Meito. Yes, there are in fact original Meito songs. This strikes me as unusual because, from what I’ve been able to tell, there aren’t many popular genderswap. Kaiko just seemed like an anomaly to me so it was really interesting to see that Meito has received a fair amount of attention. I’ve always held the belief that Meiko sounds like a female version of Kaito. Once I started to hear her that way, I was never able to remove that impression from my mind. That just came back in full force when I heard Meito’s voice because he sounds very, very similar to Kaito. It’s bizarre, but hey, I love the sound of Kaito’s voice so it’s not a bad thing to me at all.

First of all, let me explain why I like Meito and why he feels like such a discovery to me. It’s because the songs I’ve found aren’t pitch-shifted. The people using him are changing the gender factors and pitch of Meiko’s voice in the Vocaloid program rather than altering the pitch of an entire song altogether. That way, there’s no audio artifacts in the instrumentation and Meito’s voice sounds clear and well-defined. The problem I’ve always found with other genderswapped Vocaloids like Mikuo is that, more often than not, people pitch-shift an entire song and sacrifice a lot of the quality as a result. Meito and Kaiko seem to have fans who are dedicated enough to their voices to alter the voice itself, then add it to an off-vocal track.

Some people distinguish Meito by “shonen” or “danshi”, meaning a younger or older male voice. The younger sounding Meito sounds too much like regular Meiko to me. If you’re looking for some good Meito songs, I’d recommend anything by Sazanami (さざなみ) or Seppa (せっぱ). I like their choice of tuning for Meito a lot because it sounds just as masculine as Kaito. The cover of Nostalogic I chose for this post is by Seppa.

I’m not even that fond of Meiko’s regular voice, but I’ve found myself really enjoying Meito. I hope to see even more songs using his voice.

Also, I’m weak against men in cropped shirts.
